You know now that action is human behavior. Everything your characters say or do.

Dramatic action...people doing to each other...generates conflict, the fuel that drives

your story forward. But where does the action come from? What makes it happen?

All action begins with a feeling. Before people reveal any kind of behavior, they feel

they want or need  do it. No matter how simple the action nor how trivial the desire may

seem, it exists. I'm hungry. I want dinner. My phone rings. I want to answer it. It's a summer

day. I want to run along a beach wearing orange pedal pushers with an orange banner streaming behind me.

Sometimes people feel they want or need NOT to do something. I do not want to eat. I do not want to answer the phone. Me? Run on the beach like that? Ridiculous!  Indeed, negative feelings make different responses, but hesitation, reluctance, and avoidance are also human behavior. So they, too, are action.  Either way, wanting/needing to do...or NOT to do...an action is its primary motivation. Your best guide for writing action is to know and to keep in mind what your characters want. Or do NOT want.
